Southern Africa's currency landscape is shaped heavily by the South African rand, which circulates as legal tender not just in South Africa but also in Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia as part of the Common Monetary Area (CMA) — those three countries' own currencies (loti, lilangeni, and Namibian dollar) are all pegged 1:1 to the rand. Botswana deliberately opted out of the CMA to keep independent control of its monetary policy, backed by diamond export revenue. Zimbabwe's currency history stands apart from its neighbors, marked by repeated hyperinflation and redenominations, most recently the gold-backed Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) launched in 2024.

The Common Monetary Area explained

The Common Monetary Area (CMA) links South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia in a currency arrangement dating back to the 1974 Rand Monetary Area agreement. Under the CMA, the rand is legal tender across all four countries, while Lesotho's loti, Eswatini's lilangeni and Namibia's dollar are all fixed 1:1 to the rand and freely convertible with it. This gives the three smaller economies monetary stability and low transaction costs with South Africa, their dominant trading partner, at the cost of independent monetary policy — interest rate decisions are effectively set by South Africa's central bank for the whole bloc.
