About the Sudanese Pound
Sudan has changed currencies several times: the Sudanese pound first appeared in 1956 at independence, was replaced by the Sudanese dinar in 1992, and then reintroduced in its current form in 2007 following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended Sudan's long civil war and preceded South Sudan's 2011 independence (which introduced its own separate South Sudanese pound). Since fighting broke out between rival military factions in April 2023, the Sudanese pound has come under severe pressure, with banking disruptions and a widening gap between official and street exchange rates reflecting the ongoing crisis.
