About the Loti
The loti (plural: maloti) was introduced in 1980, giving the mountain kingdom of Lesotho β entirely surrounded by South Africa β its own currency for the first time since independence in 1966. Like Eswatini's lilangeni and Namibia's dollar, the loti is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand as a member of the Common Monetary Area, and the rand circulates as legal tender alongside it throughout the country.
